Do French Army Drone Attack Eagles Get Hurt?

0:00
a Johnson thank you for watching
0:11
another edition of surfing apocalypse I
0:15
like that name
0:16
I do I just like that name surfing the
0:18
apocalypse so we're also those servers
0:20
in that sense today I just want to talk
0:24
really quick about Eagles especially
0:27
French Eagles not bald eagles but their
0:30
relatives their cousins same family you
0:33
know like a bushbaby Bush smaller bushes
0:36
well Eagles so these are friends eagles
0:39
and according to a new story that's very
0:41
popular right now the French army is
0:45
training heels to go after drones and of
0:48
course if you're on the web and you're
0:51
on YouTube you sure have seen drone
0:53
footage that all aerial platforms with a
0:55
camera some called toys i call them a
0:57
lot of fun and I have several of them
1:01
just haven't been using as much they
1:04
could have been transitioning with a lot
1:07
of things I've been doing and I haven't
1:08
had time to devote to them but i'm going
1:10
to at any rate now what I want to talk
1:12
about it this is like one of the first
1:13
things I thought about when i saw this
1:15
story is simply what about the Eagles
1:18
okay now if you look at this photo right
1:20
here that came with the story
1:22
this is a gold medal which is a very
1:24
close cousin of the bald eagle so I want
1:25
you to think about that you know this is
1:27
like the national symbol if that makes
1:29
it any different if you have more
1:31
sympathy you know because it's the
1:34
symbol of our nation almost you know
1:36
relatives anyone so you see the golden
1:39
eagle attacking a drone and like heels
1:44
always attack with their legs out like
1:46
this
1:47
ok the claws spread the legs out that
1:49
you went to the attack and they come in
1:50
from above because that's just the way
1:52
the attack things they're birds they
1:54
attack things on the ground usually they
1:55
come in from above with their legs out
1:58
like that right i mean okay that's
2:01
pretty simple but what about a drone
2:03
I mean those propellers are spinning
2:04
really fast and they don't mention it in
2:06
this story but if you know anything
2:08
about drones
2:09
everything a little cheese in art hmm
2:12
you know or or a weedwacker with blades
2:14
ok
2:15
and actually the guys from mythbusters
2:18
did a little test on that so now
2:21
interestingly they used a dead chicken
2:25
so now imagine i'm gonna show you some
2:27
pictures because if you look on google
2:29
and look at drone injuries and look at
2:31
pictures it's really nasty you get
2:35
enough that i probably can't show on
2:37
youtube and still have a family-friendly
2:39
rating so just don't go there do that
2:42
search and look you know you can look
2:44
with favor sir john it's still nasty
2:46
looking anyway so back to this so you
2:52
have to imagine how the eagle is being
2:53
that Mythbusters chicken and i'll show
2:55
you those pictures
2:57
hang on a second right here okay and
3:00
here's Jamie from mythbusters with a
3:03
drone arm and a camera mounted there and
3:05
this propeller spinning and here's the
3:07
dead chicken which could be the eagle
3:09
ok so just you know bird bird eagle
3:12
chicken dead in this case not been in
3:15
the other case and he's a touching the
3:18
chicken with the spinning prop blade of
3:21
the drone what happens is oh my gosh
3:25
and then he's pointing out same thing
3:27
what happened to your neck if the drone
3:30
flew into your neck you would need to
3:32
slice you up there probably kill you
3:34
so that's the thing how bad are these
3:37
trained Eagles getting injured doesn't
3:39
matter are they flying in there and
3:40
getting their legs cut off or you know
3:42
just chopped all the hell is that was a
3:44
raise for this sacrifice themselves kind
3:47
of like you know kamikaze eagles and if
3:50
that's the case as it almost must be
3:52
it's hard to imagine they can fly into
3:55
the drones and grab them without getting
3:58
injured and that being the case you're
4:03
if you're raising these birds and you
4:04
know you're going to send me into
4:06
certain probably injury that's going to
4:08
mean them forever and can take them out
4:11
of use for the purpose that you're
4:14
raising for in there a better way
4:17
I mean we have the technology to fly
4:18
these drones can't we have an equal sort
4:23
of technological way to bring them down
4:25
and the story says is usually yields
4:28
probably the safest way to bring Browns
4:30
down that they have right now but you
4:33
know safe to who have some people on the
4:35
ground
4:36
maybe we'll what if the eagle and the
4:38
drone falls on someone's head
4:41
well we're back to this scenario at any
4:47
rate it's just a story and I think that
4:49
that is something that hasn't been
4:51
brought up within the story that should
4:53
be brought up and it's something that
4:54
should be talked about you know are we
4:56
going to do something like that in the
4:57
United States apparently other countries
4:59
are using heels to try to take down
5:01
drones and since when did drugs become a
5:04
threat that's something else to talk
5:05
about apparently in the united states i
5:07
have seen that much in that regard but
5:11
in other countries the netherlands
5:12
apparently France and probably other
5:14
countries are already seeing unmanned
5:17
aerial vehicles as a security threat and
5:20
they're treating them as that and I just
5:22
wondering how long it is before we start
5:24
doing that here and what the
5:26
consequences are going to be four drown
5:28
hobbyists and the drone industry in
5:31
general
5:32
anyway those are my thoughts on this and
5:34
hopefully ever is a new talking point
5:37
did that nobody has been looking at up
5:41
till now and thanks for watching and see
5:44
you later

Today the story about the French Army training birds of prey (Eagles) to attack drones (UAVs) is making the rounds on the web. Kind of a cool "old tech vs new tech" kind of story. Until you think about it though and realize that the spinning blades of a drone can do a lot of damage to a human or animal.

In this story I raise the issue of animal safety in relation to this story and give photo examples of the damage drones can do to birds.
